Age Requirements

To receive discount fares based on age, please check that the qualifications below are met. If there are only adult fares available for your itinerary, we will quote adult fares.

Senior: To qualify for available senior fares, passengers must be age 60 or over.

Youth: To qualify for available youth fares, passengers must be 25 and under.

Child: : Age requirements to qualify for child fares vary by product and country. Please check the details for the specific product you select. Please note that ages 4 through 11 generally qualify for the child fares except for:

  • Austria: Ages 6-15
  • Belgium: Ages 6-11
  • Bulgaria: Ages 6-11
  • Denmark: Ages 6-15
  • Czech Republic: Ages 6-11
  • Finland: Ages 6-16
  • Germany: Ages 4-14
  • Great Britain: Ages 5-15
  • Hungary: Ages 6-13
  • Luxemburg: Ages 6-11
  • Norway: Ages 4-15
  • Republic of Ireland: Ages 4-15

Seating Information
 
On most Amtrak trains, you have options for seating accommodations. The availability of these options varies depending on your route and the kind of train equipment in use. Coach class seats are available on all Amtrak trains except Acela Express trains. On most long-distance trains, we provide extra-spacious Coach Class seating with leg rests designed to enhance your comfort for long or overnight trips.

Coach Class

Reserved Coach Seats : Advanced reservations are required for coach travel on all trains that operate with overnight service (for both daytime and overnight travel) and on many shorter distance trains as well.

Unreserved Coach Seats: On certain short-distance routes, coach seating is unreserved. Unreserved seats are available to boarding passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.

Superliner Lower Level Coach Seats: Lower Level Coach seats are available on the first level of Superliner trains.

Business and First Class

Upgrade to Business Class Seats : Business Class is the minimum class of service on Acela Express. Business is offered as an upgrade option of Regional trains.  Every seat is reserved, with ample legroom and many at-seat amenities. Quiet Cars are available on select routes for travelers who wish to rest and relax without cell phones or loud conversations.

Upgrade to First Class Seats: On Acela Express trains, you can enjoy First Class service.

Onboard Upgrade: You can purchase upgrades from Coach Class to First Class and Business Class seats on board your train if unsold space is available. To purchase a seat upgrade, please speak to the Conductor or Chief of

Onboard Services: On trains with sleeping bedrooms, all sleeping bedroom accommodations are considered to be First Class accommodations. Learn more about our Sleeping Accommodations.

Amtrak will monitor seating of passengers to ensure compliance with the following policies:

  • Each passenger paying a fare is entitled to a seat, to the extent coach seats are available.
  • Passengers are entitled to one seat per fare, to ensure other paying passengers are not excluded.
  • Unless specific seats are assigned, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. On unreserved trains, there are no guaranteed seats.
  • Seating assignments are made without regard to race, color, creed, national origin or gender.
  • Amtrak reserves the right, whenever operating conditions require, to transfer passengers from one car or train to another en route.
  • Reserved Coach: Reservations are required for coach travel on all trains that operate with overnight service (for both daytime and overnight travel) and on many shorter distance trains as well.
  • Please make your reservations in advance for these reserved trains.
